London tightens visa requirements for foreign skilled workers COP28 summit: US tightens rules on methane – more than 150 countries join pact

The conservative British government wants to significantly limit migration and is tightening visa conditions for foreign workers. From spring 2024, skilled workers must receive an annual salary of at least 38,700 pounds (45,150 euros) instead of the previous 26,200 pounds to be allowed to come to Britain. Home Secretary James Cleverly announced this in Parliament in London on Monday.

The Conservative government is under significant pressure, especially within its own ranks, to drastically reduce immigration.

Nurses and students are no longer allowed to bring their relatives to the country. Compulsory healthcare costs are expected to rise by two-thirds to more than £1,000.

Slim said his plans would lead to the biggest fall in net migration in British history. The government expects about 300,000 fewer immigrants.

A total of 745,000 migrants came to Britain last year. That was considerably more than before Brexit, which was supposed to put an end to freedom of movement. Since then, the number of migrants from EU countries has fallen sharply. However, a new points-based immigration system led to significantly more people from non-EU countries immigrating.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has also pledged to stop irregular migration in small boats across the English Channel. However, the Supreme Court has halted its plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda regardless of their origin. They would have to ask for asylum in the East African country, but return is out of the question. Sunak wants to circumvent the ruling with the help of a new contract that Home Secretary Cleverly wants to conclude soon in Rwanda. (sda/dpa)
