China has accused the US of invading areas in the South China Sea claimed by Beijing. The USS Gabrielle Giffords entered the waters near Ren’ai Reef on Monday “without permission from the Chinese government,” a military spokesman in Beijing said.
Washington is “deliberately” fueling tensions in the South China Sea. The incident represents “a serious violation of Chinese sovereignty and security.” The Chinese army is monitoring ‘the entire operation’.
The reef, also known as Second Thomas Shoal, is located about 200 kilometers from the Philippine island of Palawan and more than a thousand kilometers from the Chinese island of Hainan.
China claims virtually the entire South China Sea for itself. Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam also claim parts of the maritime area, which is of great strategic and economic importance to the neighboring states. In 2016, the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague declared a number of Chinese claims to the South China Sea unlawful. China does not recognize the ruling. (AFP)
