A British student driver took the theory test in Redditch, England, 59 times – and failed it 59 times. Each time the man had to spend 23 pounds, the equivalent of 25 francs.

He finally passed on the 60th attempt. For the numerous attempts, the man paid the equivalent of 1,520 francs in entrance fees. The man spent about an hour per exam.

The theory test in England consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that test candidates’ knowledge of the rules of the road and driving and require a minimum of 43 correct answers.

This is followed by a hazard perception test in which 14 video clips of driving situations are shown.

British record broken

The man broke the British record for most driving tests completed, the BBC reports. But just barely: another student driver in Hull failed 57 tests, another in Guildford failed 55 and a driver in Tunbridge Wells failed 53 times.

Camilla Benitz, director of the AA Driving School, which has launched an app to prepare for the test, told the BBC: “It’s easy to underestimate the theoretical test. It’s a difficult test.”

Although testing has remained roughly the same, the failure rate in Britain has increased significantly in recent years. The pass rate for the theory exam fell from 65 percent in 2007-2008 to 44 percent in 2022-2023. (neo)
