Lots of glamor in the White House: US President Joe Biden welcomed several celebrities to the government headquarters. Hollywood actress Billy Crystal (75), American opera diva Renée Fleming (64) and rapper Queen Latifah (53) appeared at the White House on Sunday evening (local time) – shortly before they received prizes from the renowned Kennedy Center for her life’s work. The other two winners – singer Dionne Warwick (82) and Briton Barry Gibb (76), former singer of the Bee Gees – also made a detour to see Biden before the awards ceremony.
The American president extensively praised the work of the five artists. He described Crystal as an “American showman with a heart of gold” and Queen Latifah as a gifted storyteller.
The Kennedy Center, named after former President John F. Kennedy, is the largest cultural institution in the American capital. Previous winners include Meryl Streep, Aretha Franklin, Robert De Niro, George Lucas, Tom Hanks and Sting. Last year, Hollywood star George Clooney, rock band U2 and soul singer Gladys Knight were among those honored. (sda/dpa)
