Then Mrs. Holle gave her pillows another good shake. During the weekend, parts of Switzerland, Germany and Austria are almost covered in snow. Blick reader reporter TM* (21) from Zurich discovered first-hand that the beginning of winter can be more than just nice and cozy.

He actually wanted to go to the Austrian mountains with his brother for a ski weekend. Because he lives in Munich, M. would have to make a short stop there beforehand. But the trip went anything but as planned. On the contrary: it became an absolute horror trip.

“Everyone was annoyed”

On Friday evening, M. boarded the train at Zurich’s main station. “I left for Munich at 7:30 p.m.,” he tells Blick. He would arrive there about four hours later. But the weather put a nasty damper on his plans. Near Geltendorf, a community of 6,000 people in Upper Bavaria, the train suddenly stopped abruptly.

“Around 11:20 p.m. the announcement was made that due to the snow there was a risk that trees could fall on the route and that it would therefore be closed until further notice.” So there was no question of continuing the journey. Of course, that wasn’t exactly conducive to the atmosphere on the train. “Everyone was annoyed,” says M.

Some of the passengers then managed to continue their journey that same evening. “Some people managed to order a driver or a taxi. I tried it too, but had no success.”

His father ordered a taxi for him from Zurich

Slowly it dawned on the remaining passengers, about half of them, that they would have to spend the night on the train, for better or for worse. “It went more or less well,” said M. But he hardly slept in those few hours. After all, no one had to freeze. The heating remained on the entire time.

“The next morning the German Red Cross arrived and handed out snacks and coffee.” M. remembers that all passengers were eagerly looking for taxis again. He was also on the phone like crazy. In the end, his father got the lucky hit, who also violently hit the telephone keys from Zurich.

“At one point my father managed to find a taxi driver from Munich to pick me up in Geltendorf. Then I left for Munich around nine o’clock with three other people.” He has now arrived safely at his brother’s house. But the ski weekend is off the table for the time being. However, there is already a replacement program: “We are going to the Christmas market today.”

Deutsche Bahn advises against travel to Munich

M. has planned his return trip to Zurich for Sunday. It remains to be seen whether he will actually be home again. Because: The snowfall is expected to continue. Deutsche Bahn also warns about this. Munich’s main station is not accessible, a company spokeswoman told the Tagesschau. Long-distance traffic is currently suspended in the Munich region and the surrounding area.

The railway assumes the restrictions will last all day. “We recommend postponing travel to and from Munich,” the spokeswoman said. Does M. think he can get back to Zurich’s main station as planned? “I think so. I certainly hope so.”
