It was around 3 a.m. on November 22 when a girl, accompanied by a young man (23), passed by a McDonald’s branch in the northern Italian city of Milan. There are currently two employees of the fast food chain in front of the restaurant.
The man asks her for a cigarette and is momentarily distracted. The scared-looking girl takes the opportunity and curls four fingers of her hand into a fist. One of the two employees immediately knows what is going on.
Because: the discreet hand signal means that someone is in danger and needs help. “La Repubblica” reported on the incident.
The employee responded quickly, walked away from the others and called 911. She told the Italian newspaper that she spoke quietly so as not to attract attention and to continue the conversation with the police for as long as possible.
When the man came to her and asked if the girl could go to the toilet, she refused. The restaurant was already closed, she assured him. At the same time, she indicated to her colleague that something was wrong and that she needed help.
The alleged kidnapper finished smoking his cigarette and continued walking with the girl. However, the two McDonald’s employees followed them at a safe distance. They continued to contact the police.
A short time later, police arrived and arrested the man. Investigators later told La Repubblica that the young man wanted to kidnap the girl and was arrested for sexual assault.
The incident shows the importance of courageous intervention in such situations. Sometimes knowing the meaning of hand signals in emergency situations and being able to interpret them correctly can be crucial.
A similar case occurred in early November in the US state of North Carolina. A teenage girl (16) was kidnapped by a man. Thanks to the hand signal, she was saved. (no)
