After the violence in the Gaza Strip, aggression in the West Bank is also increasing. The region east of Israel could even become a new source of conflict.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports that Iran has invested in building military capacity and equipment in the West Bank in recent months. Israeli politicians now fear that Palestinian extremists could also initiate an attack on Israel from the West Bank.

Mark Regev (63), advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74), also warns of an attack from the West Bank – similar to the attack on October 7, when Islamists entered Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing more than 1,400 people arrived and about 250 took more people hostage.

The attack came unexpectedly to the Israelis and hit them on their left leg. After the war broke out, they stepped up their defense system and called up thousands of reservists. So if another attack were to occur, the Israelis would be ready to repel it and retaliate.

Regev’s fears are consistent with statements made by Iran’s leaders. The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Major General Hussein Salami (63), had already spoken out in an interview in August 2022 in favor of ground attacks on Israel by Hezbollah and the Palestinian militias.

Such attacks were intended to fuel internal chaos and lead to an exodus from Israel. Recently, Iranian Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Gharaei Ashtiani, 63, said the October 7 attack had slowed immigration to Israel.

Violence within one’s own ranks

There have been repeated incidents in the West Bank in recent days. During a raid, Israeli forces reportedly killed several Palestinians, including children. The Israelis were looking for people who were involved in attacks or were planning attacks when they said they had been attacked.

The extremists also fight each other within their own ranks. There are reports that two Palestinians were executed and then paraded in public for allegedly passing information to Israeli secret services.

About three million people live in the West Bank, of which 2.5 million are Palestinians. The UN General Assembly had allocated the area to the Arab state to be established in the 1947 partition plan. Since the 1967 Six-Day War, it has been considered occupied by Israel under international law. Israel is building more and more settlements, which is leading to massive criticism.
