While a corona infection goes completely unnoticed for some, it ends fatally for others. Certain risk factors play a role. In addition to well-known indicators such as age or previous diseases, researchers from the Technical University of Munich (D) have now managed to identify a biomarker for serious diseases.

The researchers took blood samples from 36 patients aged 32 to 83 years. They were all admitted to hospital with a corona infection and had a moderate to serious course. Her blood was tested for platelets. These are platelets that attach to immune cells during an infection as a result of an immune response. This causes clumps, also called cell aggregates, to form in the bloodstream.

Elevated measurements in all seriously ill people

The results of the blood tests showed a clear picture: in all seriously ill patients the number of platelets deposited had increased significantly. In extreme cases, up to two-thirds of all platelets clumped together. The researchers were also able to show that the number and composition of the lumps changes both early and gradually – depending on the severity of the disease.

In the future, these results could play a crucial role in the early treatment of corona patients. Because: According to the head of the study, Prof. Oliver Hayden, only a few drops of blood are sufficient for the blood test. Thousands of blood cells can also be examined for aggregation within seconds.

Method can also help with other diseases

The professor of biomedical electronics explains to the German Health Portal: “In addition, this method has the great advantage that we do not have to prepare or mark the samples, but can examine them directly and in a standardized way without losing the aggregates due to the effects of high shear forces.”

The researchers also assume that their results are also transferable to other diseases. They especially believe that the blood tests could work for heart and cancer diseases.
