The disappearance of Karl-Erivan Haub (†58) remains a mystery to this day. The then head of the German trading group Tengelmann left alone for a ski trip in Zermatt USA in April 2018 and did not return. The family assumes that he had a fatal accident on the Klein Matterhorn.
To date, his body has not been found. German journalist Liv von Boetticher investigated the case and discovered that Karl-Erivan Haub appeared to have led a double life in Russia. With a secret lover, working for the Russian secret service and dishonest business dealings.
“This also includes suspected money laundering activities of the Tengelmann companies ‘Plus Russia’ and ‘Obi Russia’,” von Boetticher told ‘Focus’. She reopened the case in her podcast ‘The Tengelmann Files – a Billionaire Disappears’.
And she explains how attempts were made to prevent her from doing the research. “A week ago I received my first anonymous phone call in which I was clearly warned not to go too far in my research.”
But the journalist did not let herself be stopped. She continued, claiming to have discovered that Karl-Erivan Haub had gone into hiding and was now living in Russia. It is said that the death in the mountains was staged. And not only that: Haub’s family is said to have known about it and even have photos showing Karl-Erivan Haub in Moscow – a few months after his mysterious disappearance in the mountains of Valais.
According to von Boetticher, there was a motive for a staged death. Because: He had a fight with his brother. After Karl-Erivan Haub disappeared, his younger brother Christian took over exclusive management of the multibillion-dollar trading group. Until now, the family business was each one-third owned by Karl-Erivan Haub and current boss Christian Haub.
From Boetticher to “Focus”: “To arrange the succession in management clearly and quickly, it would have been easiest to prove that Karl-Erivan had staged an escape. By proving conduct detrimental to the company, Haub’s eldest son could have been excluded from management.”
Before the podcast, Von Boetticher made her research public. She first summarized her findings in the book “The Tengelmann File – What Role the Russian Secret Service Plays and Why German Authorities Don’t Investigate.”
For them it is clear: there is more to the disappearance of Karl-Erivan Haub than just a tragic accident in the mountains. That’s why she’s so angry that German authorities are reportedly not conducting a thorough investigation. But she doesn’t give up. “I will take all possible steps to remind the Cologne Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Justice in North Rhine-Westphalia of their duty to investigate crimes.”
The court in Cologne declared the billionaire dead in 2021. In recent months, reports have appeared in the media about doubts about the death of the experienced skier. The court noted at the time that there was no evidence to support the escape theories. Claims to the contrary were based on “assumptions and unverifiable documents,” it emerged.
