Classified as “extremist”: Russia bans LGBTQ+ movement as “extremist”

The judges on Thursday approved a corresponding request from the Russian Justice Ministry, the Interfax agency reported, citing the court. Accordingly, it was decided to “recognize the international public LGBT movement as an extremist organization and ban its activities in Russia.”

The approach had already been heavily criticized by human rights activists. Independent Russian media have now pointed out that the judges have not even made it clear who exactly in their eyes belongs to the “LGBT movement”.

The specific effects of the scheme were therefore initially unknown. Queer activists, who have already been subjected to severe repression, fear that the Russian judiciary’s actions are primarily aimed at publicly silencing them and will further fuel hatred against minorities.

The English abbreviation LGBTQI+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people – and the plus sign and asterisk are placeholders for other identities and genders.
