X, Meta, TikTok: the heads of online platforms must testify again in the US Senate

Several heads of major online platforms will have to answer questions from US senators again at the end of January. The head of Elon Musk’s online platform X, Linda Yaccarino, will also be present for the first time. The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, scheduled for January 31, will focus on child safety on the platforms.

The head of the Facebook group Meta, Mark Zuckerberg and TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew voluntarily agreed to participate, the committee announced on Wednesday. Yaccarino, the head of the Snapchat company Snap, Evan Spiegel and their colleague from the chat app Discord, Jason Citron, should have been officially subpoenaed first.

The safety of children and youth is an ongoing issue in the U.S. Congress. Recently, Meta has also found itself in the crosshairs of dozens of states, which have accused the company in court of saying its online services harm young users — and Meta tolerates that. Yaccarino publicly defended this course. (sda/dpa)
