Tasteless or a bold statement? German politician Tessa Ganserer (46) used to have the first name Markus. In 2021, the Greens secured a women’s quota place in the Bundestag.
Since then she has been fighting for the rights of transgender people. That was also the case on Tuesday at a family committee hearing on gender self-determination.
But the content of the meeting has now caused less discussion than the transparent outfit that the Green Party wore during its performance. Ganserer wore a see-through blouse that clearly exposed the politician’s bare skin. Underneath she only wore a black bra. Her sweater, which covered her arms and neck, also revealed her entire upper body.
The waves on social media are high. “We used to tell our daughters not to leave the house like that because it would make them look like sluts. “Nowadays men think that this is appropriate clothing in the presence of the family committee of the Bundestag,” writes a user on X.
Another X user says: “Tessa Ganserer mocks femininity. No woman would sit in parliament like that!”
Another commentator believes that the institution of the Bundestag has been degraded by Ganserer’s actions: “There is no respect for the office anymore.” Supportive voices such as ‘beautiful’ or ‘role model for all transgender people’ are rather rare. A commentator takes the opportunity to take a swipe at the traffic light government, which is driving up heating costs with its policy: “By the way, Tessa Ganserer’s outfit suggests that the Bundestag should be properly heated.” (no)
