However brave and clever the Ukrainian soldiers are, their surprising successes against Putin’s army would not have been possible without the help of the US. Uncle Sam has been very generous thus far. So far, weapons worth about $60 billion have been shipped to Ukraine. In addition, there is the extremely important real-time information, which the Ukrainians also owe a great deal to the Americans.
All the more so was the shock in Kiev over an interview Kevin McCarthy, the leader of the Grand Old Party (GOP), recently gave to online portal Punchbowl News. In it, he questions future US military aid to Ukraine. And given that Republicans have a good chance of securing a majority in the November 8 midterm elections, the concerns of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his crew are more than understandable.
McCarthy said, “I don’t think people who are in a recession are ready to sign a blank check to Ukraine. They’re just not going to do that.”
Then he added another: “The Biden government is failing to do important things in its own country. This also applies to the situation at the border. People will weigh this. Ukraine is important, but at the same time, not everything can revolve around them. And there should be no more blank checks.”
In addition to the shock, these statements in Kiev also met with misunderstanding. David Arakhamia, leader of Zelenskyy’s party, told the Financial Times: “A few weeks ago a delegation of ours visited the United States and met Mr McCarthy there. He assured us that bipartisan support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia will remain a top priority even if Republicans win the election.”
The attitude of the conservatives towards the war in Ukraine is similar to the situation in Switzerland. We have Roger Köppel, who understands Putin, and is fighting with Ukrainian friend Markus Somm. The same conflict reigns among the star anchors at Fox News. Tucker Carlson is on the Russian side, Sean Hannity on the Ukrainian side.
In the US, too, those who understand Putin are still in the minority. Recent polls show that about a third of Americans who are pro-GOP think aid is too generous. However, the trend is worrying. At the beginning of the war it was only nine percent.
McCarthy has been chasing this trend lately. When the war broke out, he accused President Joe Biden of not doing enough to help Ukraine. This is not surprising. Rather, McCarthy lives up to his reputation as a defector. After the storm on capital, he had heavily criticized Donald Trump. A few weeks later, he kissed his ring in Mar-a-Lago.
Within the GOP, those who understand Putin are still in the minority. Only 11 Republican senators and 57 lawmakers voted against the aid package addressed to Ukraine in May. This support has steadily increased. The US announced last Friday that it would allocate an additional $725 million, mainly for ammunition for the HIMARS, the high-precision missile system that is plaguing the Russians.
McCarthy isn’t fair either. He doesn’t want to stop aid, but he wants to pressure Europeans to do more, he says. He is supported by the Conservative Political Action Conference, an influential right-wing institution. The latter also announced on its website that it was time to stop “donating to Ukraine”. And: “We have to fight Putin, but we also have to defend ourselves against the American taxpayer who only bears the costs.” This message has since been removed.
Should Republicans actually win the midterm elections, the tone of American politics will become even sharper. The GOP is no longer a political party, it has become a cult and defies all reason. She is no longer interested in constructive politics, but only wants to do everything she can to throw a spanner in the works for the Biden administration.
A typical example of the new generation of Republicans is Marjorie Taylor Greene, a representative from the state of Georgia. When she was elected two years ago, she was considered exotic and the majority smiled at her. No wonder. The QAnon sympathizer supports statements such as: The California wildfires were lit by Jewish laser cannons in space. In addition, Greene, who once confused the Spanish soup gaspacho with the Nazi secret police Gestapo, was banned from all committees for refusing to abide by Congressional rules.
Meanwhile, Taylor Greene has become not only a norm within the GOP, but also a powerhouse. It will soon win a large number of like-minded people, as the majority of newly elected Republican congressmen will be staunch Trump supporters and fully support his Big Lie.
Like Trump, they will also be unpredictable. So it is quite possible that a Republican majority will try to stop aid to Ukraine for purely opportunistic reasons. However, the Democrats can prevent this. You have the opportunity in the current session to pass on a major aid package for Ukraine.
