With a harvest of more than 151 million tons of grain and legumes – including almost 99 million tons of wheat – Russia can meet its own needs and ship record quantities to “foreign partners”, Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev said on Tuesday, according to state media. Russia ended the previous season with an export record of 60 million tons.
According to Patrushev, Russia has already generated the second largest grain yield in the country’s history in the season running from summer 2023 to summer 2024. Production of various other agricultural products such as rice and potatoes will also increase in 2023, he said.
The agricultural sector has been hit by a series of sanctions since the start of Moscow’s war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine. The government in Kiev accuses Moscow of stealing $1 billion worth of Ukrainian grain since the invasion. “The Russian plunder of Ukraine continues,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said last weekend.
Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has repeatedly complained about the sanctions, which he says are hampering Russian grain exports. In July, Putin promised to deliver 25,000 to 50,000 tons of grain for free to some African countries in the coming months.
