Defeat for Musk: Hollywood studios closed X accounts

The media companies took the decision partly because they feared a negative climate for their brands, the American broadcaster CNN reported on Tuesday evening. Officially, representatives from studios such as Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. do not comment.

It is notable that the studio accounts on X (formerly Twitter) have not published any new posts since November 17. By the way, such breaks are highly unusual, as new films are released every week and need to attract more attention on online platforms.

In mid-November, X’s reputation was damaged twice. Owner Musk endorsed a post with an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. It said, among other things, that “hatred against whites” was spread by the Jews. Musk wrote under the post that it contained the “actual truth.”

Hate speech researchers also showed how ads from well-known brands appeared next to Nazi content. X then claimed that the organization Media Matters for America had caused the ads to appear next to the messages by repeatedly loading the profiles and went to court.

After the two incidents, several major companies stopped advertising on X. The New York Times reported this weekend, citing internal documents, that the platform, already struggling with weak sales, could lose up to $75 million in revenue by the end of the year. X claimed in a statement that the amount was only about eleven million dollars.

Musk has repeatedly emphasized in recent weeks that he is not an anti-Semite and was received in Israel on Monday. There he visited, among other things, a kibbutz that was attacked by the Islamist Hamas on October 7, together with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
