The Polish president swears by Morawiecki’s hopeless PiS government. Thai para-athlete shoots bride and himself at his own wedding

Polish President Andrzej Duda sworn in the new cabinet of former national-conservative Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Monday, although his PiS party does not have a governing majority in parliament. Speaking at the ceremony in Warsaw’s presidential palace, Duda said he was pleased with the high proportion of women and the many younger members of the cabinet.

The formation of the PiS government is seen as a purely political spectacle. Apart from himself and Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, there are no prominent PiS politicians in Morawiecki’s new cabinet, but rather many previously unknown faces.

In the parliamentary elections on October 15, three pro-European parties from the previous opposition, led by former EU Council President Donald Tusk, won a clear majority. A coalition agreement has already been signed.

But even in view of this majority situation, President Duda, who himself comes from the ranks of the PiS, instructed Morawiecki to form a government. Opposition representatives accuse Duda of trying to prevent political change for weeks.

Morawiecki must now submit a motion of confidence in parliament within fourteen days. However, he does not have a majority there and will probably fail. Only then can the former opposition form their government. (sda/dpa)
