Police have arrested a suspect after the shooting of three students of Palestinian descent in the United States. Jason E.* (48) was arrested near the crime scene on Sunday afternoon (local time), police in the city of Burlington in the northeastern state of Vermont announced on Monday evening. The man lives in a residential building in front of which the three students were shot and injured.

A search of the apartment and further investigation results had confirmed the suspicion against the man, Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad said. The suspect had to appear in court on Monday. Authorities are investigating whether the attack was a hate crime. In addition to the local police, the American federal police, the FBI and the American weapons authority ATF are also involved in the investigation.

Shooting in Burlington, Vermont

The three 20-year-old students were shot in Burlington on Saturday evening. According to police, the young men were walking when they were suddenly confronted by a white man armed with a gun. Without saying anything, the man shot the students at least four times.

Police said two of the victims were in a “stable” condition after the attack, while the third Palestinian was “more seriously injured.” During the attack, two of the victims wore traditional Palestinian scarves. Due to the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Palestinian organization Hamas, there is currently an increase in anti-Semitic and Islamophobic attacks worldwide.

The three Palestinians had attended a private school in the West Bank. You are currently studying at three different universities in the northeastern United States. They were in Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Two of the young men have US citizenship and the third has US residency. (AFP)
