Brazilian Caio Benicio overpowered the Dublin stab.

Out of nowhere, a man caused a disturbing massacre in Dublin on Thursday. He stabbed innocent children with a knife near Parnell Square. Since then, a five-year-old girl and a teacher who tried to intervene have been in very serious condition. Caio Benicio, 43, a food delivery worker for Deliveroo, prevented more people from being injured in the brutal attack. The Brazilian is now being hailed as a Dublin hero.

Now the children will be buried with dignity

When the Brazilian noticed the crime, he immediately jumped off his motorcycle and hit the perpetrator with his helmet. This one fell to the ground. “It wasn’t even a decision, it was just pure instinct,” the courier told the Daily Mail newspaper.

He had previously seen the perpetrator physically assault the child and his teacher. Suddenly he drew the knife. Now he just hopes the woman and little girl will survive. ‘I saw the girl in the ambulance. She looked so vulnerable. I pray for them both.” If the two victims don’t make it, Benicio says he will spend the rest of his life thinking he should have done something better.

The police speak of wave-like violence

The police praised the selfless actions of the father of two children: “We must pay a lot of praise to the people who intervened. They restrained the man so he couldn’t hurt anyone else. I can tell you you saved lives.”

On social media it sounds the same: “This man will never have to pay for a beer again,” one user wrote. Individual restaurant owners promised the Brazilian that he would eat in their restaurant for life.

Benicio came to Ireland to work after his restaurant in Brazil burned down. His family are still in Brazil and the 43-year-old hopes they can move in with him soon.

Was the perpetrator in a psychological state of emergency?

News that the attacker was believed to be an Algerian immigrant spread like wildfire through the city and mobilized hundreds of people. They rebelled and destroyed large parts of the city. Security authorities blamed right-wing extremist troublemakers for the riots. Emergency services attempted to control the crowd with a huge contingent, but the rioters’ willingness to use violence made this a major challenge.

The riots make Benicio think: “It seems they hate immigrants. Well, I’m an immigrant and I did what I could to save that little girl.”

Meanwhile, the perpetrator’s motive remains unclear. The police are investigating in all directions. “We look at how and when the man came to Ireland. The officers also check whether there are links between the perpetrator and the attacked persons,” said a police spokesperson. Apparently it is also clarified whether the perpetrator has experienced a “psychotic episode”. (An)
