Thousands protest in Nepal for the reintroduction of the monarchy UN: more women will be murdered worldwide in 2022 than in twenty years

Thousands of people took part in a demonstration in Nepal demanding the reinstatement of the monarchy. Police used tear gas and batons on Thursday to prevent about 9,000 protesters from gathering in the center of the capital Kathmandu, a police spokesman told the German news agency. About two dozen were injured.

Protest organizer Durga Parsai explained the demand, saying governments have made no progress in the poor Himalayan country since the abolition of the Hindu monarchy 15 years ago. According to the United Nations, the small state between China and India is one of the least developed countries in the world.

Nepal was a kingdom for 240 years. The republic was proclaimed in 2008 following an agreement between the six ruling parties and former Maoist rebels following a ten-year civil war (1996-2006). There was also a counter-demonstration of about 7,000 supporters of the republic on Thursday, the police spokesman said. This demonstration was peaceful. (saw/sda/dpa)
