Bodycam video shows police checking on the stowaway.

A 43-year-old man had a disastrous idea after a binge in Nambucca Heads, Australia: Instead of calling a taxi, the man decided to climb onto the undercarriage of a stationary truck while the driver slept in a rest area.

The Australian thought he could hide home and jump a red light in Coffs Harbor in northern New South Wales. After all, there are at least ten intersections on the Pacific Highway. The route is approximately 50 kilometers.

Four hours later…

However, when the truck driver woke up and drove away, he caught a remarkable green wave and only stopped about four hours later in the Gold Coast, Queensland, almost 400 kilometers away. To his surprise, the 43-year-old climbed out from under the truck.

When police arrived, the uninvited passenger explained, “I’m very stressed, I had something to drink.” The man said he was from Coffs Harbour. He was picked up by a truck driver.

The police took him to the train station

In bodycam video of the police operation, an officer can be heard saying: “You’ve been drinking heavily, lost control, somehow got here and now you have to try to get back?” The man confirms. One of the officers says it’s no wonder he’s scared under a truck at 70 mph. “You can not do that.” Another officer laughs as the man explains that he had hoped to jump off in Coffs Harbour, but the truck driver “had the green light the whole time and only stopped here.”

The 43-year-old was fined approximately 170 francs. Police then took him to a nearby train station where he could begin the long journey home. (no)
