“I thought I was going to die.” Sandrine Josso (48) described on Monday on the French TV channel France 5 how she experienced the evening with French senator Joël Guerriau (66). The politician invited the MP to his home on November 14 to celebrate his recent re-election. Josso and Guerriau have known each other for ten years and are friends, so she was not surprised by the invitation. She went to him ‘in confidence’.
But when Guerriau offered her a glass of champagne and tried to toast her several times, she became suspicious. Because: The champagne tasted strange. Much “sweeter” than normal, while the Frenchman would have played with the dimmer at the same time. “He turned the light on very forcefully and then off again,” a well-known technique to “increase the effectiveness of the drug,” as doctors later explained to her in the hospital where she ended the night.
When she had “palpitations” and “sweats,” she saw Guerriau in his kitchen putting “a white bag under the countertop.” What she didn’t know at the time: it was ecstasy. Police later found the drug during a search of the house. Josso just wanted to leave. She ordered a taxi and fled the apartment. “I was panicking, my heart was pounding. It felt like I was having a heart attack.
She is still in shock, her lawyer Julia Minkowski told the AFP news agency. At the hospital, Josso was examined and blood was taken. Analysis showed that she had ecstasy in her blood.
Joël Guerriau was arrested last Thursday. He is suspected of drugging the MP with the intention of sexually abusing her, the AFP news agency has learned from a source familiar with the case, confirming a report by broadcaster RMC. On Saturday, a day after his indictment, he was suspended from his party.
Joël Guerriau denies the accusations. He will “fight” to “prove that he never wanted to give his colleague and long-time girlfriend a means to abuse her.” He didn’t know the powder was ecstasy. Since his cat had recently passed away, he wanted to be given a euphoric drug to help him cope with the loss. On the eve of the meeting with Josso, he put the powder in a champagne glass, but did not drink it. When Josso was with him the next day and they also wanted to drink champagne, he accidentally got the wrong glass with the drug.
According to media reports, Guerriau tested positive for numerous drugs in a toxicology analysis. Traces of MDMA, methadone, cocaine, cannabis, opiates and amphetamines were found in his blood. (AFP/jmh)
