Former US President Donald Trump’s company is said to have charged Secret Service employees significantly more for hotel stays than was officially approved during his tenure.
Up to five times higher fees were paid for nighttime security guards at Trump hotels to protect the ex-president and his family than the rate allowed by the government in such cases.
This was announced by the chairman of the relevant committee in the US Congress, Carolyn Maloney, in a letter to Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday. She asked Cheatle to give full accountability to the committee on the matter.
Expense reports show that the Trump Organization charged the Secret Service 40 times much higher than usual — in one case, about $1,185 for an overnight stay at Trump’s International Hotel in Washington, DC.
This could have cost US taxpayers at least $1.4 million. Maloney wrote that the “exorbitant rates” and “frequent visits by agents to Trump-owned properties” raise serious concerns that Trump may have been selfish. (sda/dpa)
