An influential French senator apparently wanted to meet an old acquaintance, a member of parliament who was sexually submissive and used ecstasy.

A French senator from the government camp is suspected of secretly putting ecstasy in a member of parliament’s drink to make her sexually submissive. The 66-year-old center-right senator Joël Guerriau has been taken into custody, according to the Public Prosecution Service. On Friday, an hours-long confrontation took place between the alleged perpetrator and the plaintiff, a member of the National Assembly. She said: “I was afraid of dying or having a heart attack.”

“Sandrine Josso is still in shock,” said her lawyer Julia Minkowski. “She had to exert great physical and mental strength to escape the trap at the last minute,” she said. She also feels betrayed because Guerriau was a friend she trusted for decades. Josso (48) belongs to the Modem party, which is also part of the government camp. The senator denied the allegations through his lawyer.

Bags with white substance

According to the prosecutor’s description, she drank champagne at the senator’s apartment on Wednesday evening. He invited old acquaintances to celebrate his recent re-election. She saw him take a small plastic bag containing a white substance from a kitchen drawer. Then she felt sick. Her heart started beating and she broke out into a sweat.

During a medical examination, traces of ecstasy were found in her body. Later, the senator’s apartment was searched, where, according to the Public Prosecution Service, ecstasy was also found. French broadcaster BFM reported, citing police sources, that the senator had tested positive for several drugs.

Senator in custody

Josso sued for administering a mind-altering drug for the purpose of sexual abuse. Guerriau was held in police custody for 48 hours. This is possible despite his parliamentary immunity because the alleged crime only occurred recently.

Guerriau belongs to the Horizons party of former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe (52). “If even the slightest bit of this is true, he will have to draw conclusions,” said Christophe Béchu (49), general secretary of the party and also minister of the environment. His party wants to discuss the possible consequences on Saturday.

Guerriau held several high positions at various banks, was mayor of a small town on the Loire for a long time and has been a member of the Senate, the second chamber of the French parliament, since 2011. Senate President Gérard Larcher (74) called for the resignation of Guerriau, who had spoken out against any form of drug use in previous speeches. (AFP/kes)
