“Their situation is desperate,” is how the UN Migration Organization (IOM) described the situation of the returnees on Tuesday. “Most people told us they were forced to leave the country, leaving behind their belongings and savings.”
Currently, thousands of Afghan refugees are leaving Pakistan every day. The government in Islamabad had given refugees without residency status a November 1 deadline to leave the country voluntarily or face arrest and deportation. Since this announcement, more than 340,000 Afghans have returned to their homeland, according to Pakistani authorities in the border provinces.
However, after decades of conflict, instability and economic crisis, Afghanistan is finding it difficult to accommodate the large number of returning families. “With more than six million internally displaced people across the country, Afghans returning from Pakistan face a precarious, uncertain future,” the IOM said. Especially in view of the approaching winter, the returnees need urgent help, but long-term support is also needed.
