A US Navy plane overshot the runway and crashed into the sea as it approached a base in Hawaii. All nine people on board were unharmed in the incident on Monday (local time).
This was reported by American media, citing the military. They freed themselves from the plane and were then rescued from the water, the New York Times reported, citing a base spokeswoman.
The cause of the incident was initially unclear. Local media reported difficult weather conditions that day with rain and clouds. Honolulu, the capital of the US state of Hawaii, is also on the island of Oahu, where the incident occurred.
Photos and videos in local media showed the plane sticking out of the water after the incident. The images were reminiscent of the plane that made a spectacular emergency landing on New York’s Hudson River in 2009 without anyone being injured.
CNN reported that it was a P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft. The machine, which has the fuselage of the Boeing 737 passenger plane, can carry both torpedoes and cruise missiles and is used, among other things, in reconnaissance missions.
To prevent the spread of hazardous substances, barriers were placed in the water, NBC News reported, citing information from the US naval base. This is located in Kaneohe Bay, which is also home to coral reefs, a breeding ground for hammerhead sharks and a marine biology research institute at the University of Hawaii, wrote the Hawaiian newspaper ‘Star Advertiser’.
