The Poggioreale Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Naples – and one of the largest in Europe. The poet Salvatore Di Giacomo and the composers Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli and Sigismund Thalberg are buried here. After a partial collapse of the four-story building called “Resurrection”, several coffins dangle meters above the abyss. Bodies were also found, according to Ansa news agency. No one was injured. After a check by the fire brigade, the entire site of the cemetery was closed off. It is still unclear what caused the collapse. There has been a lot of rain in recent days.

For many Neapolitans, the rain theory falls short. They accuse the authorities of paying too little attention to the maintenance of the cemeteries. Green politician (Europa Verde) Francesco Emilio Borelli writes on Facebook: “At the cemetery of Poggioreale, another building collapses. The situation is critical and unacceptable. For too many years, the cemeteries in Naples have been mismanaged and left to their own devices. Now they are the victims of scammers and profiteers.”

He does not explain who Borelli’s criticism is aimed at. In January, a house collapsed in the same cemetery in Naples. 300 niche graves were destroyed. The investigation into this incident is still ongoing, according to the Guardian.
