The White House condemned Elon Musk’s endorsement of a conspiracy theory on his social media platform

The post falsely claimed that Jewish people were stirring up “hatred of white people.” The billionaire and Tesla boss chimed in on the post on X on Wednesday, writing that the user who referenced the “Great Exchange” conspiracy theory was telling the “actual truth.”

The White House accused Musk of “disgusting promotion of anti-Semitic and racist hatred” that is contrary to core American values.

“It is unacceptable to repeat this vile lie one month after the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust,” White House spokesman Andrew Bates said. He was referring to the attack by the terrorist organization Hamas on Israel on October 7.

Companies like Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery and NBCUniversal parent company Comcast then temporarily stopped advertising on Musk’s social media page X.

Apple also stops advertising

On Friday, Lions Gate Entertainment and Paramount Global followed suit. News site Axios reported that Apple, the world’s largest company by market value, has also halted its advertising on X.

IT group IBM had already stopped advertising on the platform on Thursday after a media regulator report found that IBM ads were placed next to content promoting Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. X subsequently announced that its system does not intentionally place brands next to “this type of content.”

Since Elon Musk’s purchase of the social media platform formerly known as Twitter in October 2022, content moderation has been significantly reduced. According to civil rights groups, this has led to a sharp increase in hate speech on the website. Numerous former major advertising clients have since dropped out.
