The ground offensive in the Gaza Strip is in full swing. On Saturday, the Israeli army announced that it had taken control of the northern Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) then said that Hamas fighters “no longer have a safe place to hide.”

The Israeli army (IDF) focuses mainly on hospitals. As the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced on Tuesday, only one hospital remains functioning in northern Gaza. Al-Ahli Hospital would operate “at a minimum level” and treat around 500 patients. The World Health Authority (WHO) also reported that 22 of 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip were no longer functioning.

Al-Shifa Hospital

The largest medical facility on the coastal strip, Al-Shifa Hospital, is currently under attack. As the IDF announced Wednesday morning, “the precise and targeted operation against Hamas” is still ongoing.

On the BBC a reporter said: “I saw six tanks in the hospital and more than a hundred commandos. They stormed the emergency room, some soldiers were masked and shouted in Arabic: ‘Don’t move, don’t move.'” Footage from Al Jazeera also shows a hospital worker walking through the intensive care unit, showing patients being placed in dark corridors ventilated and says it is impossible to evacuate them.

According to the WHO, there were about 700 patients, 400 hospital staff and about 3,000 refugees in the hospital on Tuesday. Among them were 36 premature babies who had to be removed from the incubators due to a power outage. Three of them died as a result.

The IDF shared images via X on Wednesday morning of medical supplies and incubators reportedly arriving at the hospital. “Our medical team and Arabic-speaking soldiers are on the ground to ensure these supplies reach those in need.”

The IDF suspects that the hospital is the ‘heart of Hamas’. She denies this. A spokesperson told Al Jazeera: “The Israeli occupation and anyone who collaborated with it to kill children, patients and innocent civilians will be held accountable.” The “false narrative” that the hospital is being used for military purposes is a “green light” for Israel to carry out further massacres of civilians and forcibly expel them from the north.

Al-Shati refugee camp

“The 401st Brigade attacked numerous targets on the outskirts of al-Shati camp from the ground and air,” the IDF said Tuesday afternoon. The refugee camp is located in the north of Gaza City, in the Rimal district. Al-Quds University, schools and mosques were reportedly attacked there.

The IDF said it had gained control of the camp. According to the military, al-Shati was a Hamas stronghold: “There is a lot of enemy infrastructure in the camp and many Hamas forces were concentrated there, including the al-Shati battalion, which played a central role on October 7.”

On Tuesday, The Times of Israel reported that the army was now destroying Hamas infrastructure there, including tunnels and weapons depots. Five tunnel entrances were reportedly found on Tuesday afternoon.

Tulkarm refugee camp

As the IDF announced via X on Tuesday, the army is said to have carried out raids on the Tulkarm refugee camp. They also attacked with drones. The camp is located on the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority said at least six Palestinians were killed in the attack. Several arrests are also said to have taken place.

According to the IDF, soldiers in the camp discovered explosives, eliminated terrorists, searched buildings and interrogated suspects. The operation has now been completed.

Government facilities in Rimal

Israeli soldiers reportedly captured several Hamas government facilities in the Sheikh Ejalin and Rimal areas. This also includes Hamas’s military and police stations. The organization’s headquarters would also have been taken over. The IDF posted an image showing soldiers in Hamas’s parliament building. They posed there with Israeli flags.

Rantisi Hospital

The Israeli army has also carried out attacks around Rantisi Hospital. The hospital evacuated on Sunday specializes in the treatment of children with cancer.

The IDF claims to have found numerous weapons in the basement of Rantisi Hospital. Military spokesman Daniel Hagari said there was also evidence that hostages were also being held there. He showed the alleged Hamas facility in a video. A tunnel entrance could be seen that would lead straight to the hospital.

In the video, Hagari also showed explosive belts, hand grenades, guns and explosives that Hamas allegedly hid under the hospital. The purpose of the recordings is to “prove to the world how Hamas has turned hospitals into its terror machine.”
