At first glance it seems unremarkable. Like a normal sailboat, simply modern. In reality, the new addition to the US Navy is a multi-purpose weapon with which the US is trying to contain Iran’s power in the Middle East.

The unmanned “Triton,” manufactured by Ocean Aero, can be converted from a sailboat to a submarine. It is the world’s first and only autonomous underwater and surface vehicle. The “Triton” can sail and dive autonomously and operate both above and hidden beneath the ocean’s surface. The goal is clear: to irritate the enemy through camouflage and make your own offensives unpredictable.

“Now is the time to scale up the armed forces”

“Triton” is built to be versatile and to fulfill missions in different conditions, as Kevin Decker, CEO of Ocean Aero, explains in a report in the “Wall Street Journal”. Triton is part of a larger initiative by the US Department of Defense to introduce thousands of new unmanned systems. US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks announced a few days ago: “Now is the time to scale up the military. We have the opportunity to make a radical change that we have been seeking for a long time.”

If the sailing ship is to become a submarine, the mast is folded down. It slowly fills with water before sinking. “Triton” has the function of collecting all kinds of data and transmitting it to the US military at any time. The cargo includes at least five cameras that can detect enemy movements and 740 solar panels, which will allow the ship to sail autonomously for three months.

Opponents can be surprised

Weapons and communications systems, some of which are controlled by artificial intelligence, can be stored on the “Triton”. The ship can communicate very accurately even in remote areas and therefore has a fast response time in case of complications in corresponding missions. This can surprise the opponent. ‘Triton’ is difficult to detect on radars, which increases the surprise effect.

The plan is for “Triton” to be used both offensively in attacks and defensively to secure ports by collecting radar data and monitoring 5G lines. Decker’s goal is to increase production to the point where the “Triton” can function as a swarm. It must be possible to use multiple “Tritons” together.

“Customers decide whether our cargo holds will be supplied with weapons in the long term. We simply offer the opportunity to do that.” Ocean Aero also has contact with Australia and Great Britain, which are very interested in the watercraft.
