Missing hiker Richard M. was found dead on October 30 after more than two months.

“Rough, rocky and steep” is how the road leading to the summit of Blackhead Peak in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado is described. On August 19, Richard M.* (†71) from Pagosa Springs came there with his Jack Russel Terrier Finny.

But then the two suddenly disappeared without a trace. They searched in vain for the walking duo for more than two months, reports ‘The Mercury News’. On October 30, a local hunter discovered the American’s body. Next to him was his dog – who was still alive!

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue personnel were then flown in to rescue the victim. Faithful companion Finny was first taken to a local vet and later finally reunited with his family.

It is not yet clear how the injured hiker died. According to the authorities, there is currently no suspicion of a crime, the ‘Denzer Gazette’ reports.

Search operation under difficult circumstances

After the discovery, the Taos Search and Rescue Team posted on Facebook about the previous search. Delinda Vanne-Brightyn, a member of the rescue group, talks about the difficult circumstances she and her team faced during the search. There were constant strong winds and the terrain was extremely steep.

At the same time she also expresses her condolences. But she was “happy that they were able to draw a line in the sand and take their dog home.” Other users are also speaking out and expressing their condolences. They are also amazed at what a special dog Finny is and thank the search and rescue teams for their efforts.
