Due to a system glitch, China Southern Airlines accidentally sold tickets for the equivalent of 1.30 francs. (symbol image)

Instead of 50 to 60 francs, a plane ticket from Chengdu to Beijing cost only 1.30 francs on Wednesday evening. The customers were satisfied and shared screenshots of their bookings online. For two hours, tickets were offered for 10 to 30 yuan, equivalent to 1.30 to 3.80 francs.

As CNN reports, there was a technical glitch in the company’s online and mobile booking system during this period. But it wasn’t just via the airline’s app that prices dropped to a fortieth of the normal price; Various booking platforms, including market leader Trip.com, were also affected.

Tickets remain valid

Customers didn’t get away with it so cheaply. Airport charges and fuel surcharges worth 14 francs will be added to the ticket price. Thanks to the system glitch, they were still able to get a bargain.

China Southern Airlines only commented on the incident on Thursday. She announced on Chinese social media that all purchased tickets remain valid. “Passengers can use them normally,” the Guangzhou-based Chinese airline confirmed. Provided that the tickets have already been paid for and issued.

It was not disclosed how many tickets were sold at the reduced prices. No mention was made of any potential losses the airline may have suffered as a result of the system outage. (gs)
