The images from Gaza are unbearable: wounded and displaced people lie in hospital corridors. Lots of children and women. They are not taken care of. Surgeons operate under the illusion of smartphones. Without anesthesia. They disinfect the wounds with vinegar. Premature babies lie close together on a hospital bed. Their incubators are cold.
There is a lack of oxygen, water and medicine. The telephone network also no longer works. The World Health Organization is crying out. According to the WHO on Platform, there are “horrific conditions” in Gaza’s largest hospital. It is the only one in Gaza with a children’s ward.
At least 2,300 people are staying in the clinic complex, including 600 patients and 1,500 displaced persons. The figures come from the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Also that of the youngest victims: seven of the 36 newborns and 27 other patients died due to the shortage. The information cannot be verified. The UN adds another figure: three nurses were killed in Israeli shelling outside the clinic.
All hospitals in northern Gaza are out of service due to the ongoing fighting, the deputy health minister of the radical Islamist Hamas, Yussef Abu Rish, told the AFP news agency. Gaza’s second largest hospital, Al-Kuds, is also in a precarious situation. “The hospital has been closed off from the outside world for a week,” Tommaso Della Longa, spokesman for the International Red Cross, told BBC News.
It is not by chance that hospitals in Gaza are involved in the fighting. They are part of the battlefield, of psychological warfare, but are also the target of military operations. The terrorist organization’s story can be seen online: Israel is responsible for the misery, has starved the people with its complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, is committing genocide against the Palestinians through a hail of rockets – and doesn’t even stop at hospitals.
And so the bad news and shocking photos work like missiles in the conscience of the world public. Whether it is thousands of mass demonstrations around the world, Western governments, the UN, the WHO or the Arab world, everyone is calling for a humanitarian ceasefire or even a ceasefire. Criticism of the Israeli ground offensive is becoming increasingly louder.
It’s true: Israel really has its sights set on hospitals and surrounding areas. But the goal is not to attack patients, refugees or hospital staff, but to destroy Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured on Sunday: “We will act as quickly but also as carefully as possible because we want to maintain the number of civilian casualties. and want to keep our own casualties as low as possible.” Fuel was offered to Al-Shifa Hospital and 300 liters were left about 300 meters away. The buses were never collected.
The Israeli army is safe: terrorists are hiding under the hospitals and may also be holding Israeli hostages. The argument from Tel Aviv is that they are using the people in the hospitals as a protective shield.
In the New York Times, eight anonymous Israeli intelligence officials reported on a command center that Hamas had built under Al-Shifa Hospital over the past sixteen years. It is an underground labyrinth on several floors with living areas and warehouses powered by the hospital’s electricity. The informants continued that there would be room for hundreds of fighters. Photos presented reportedly show tunnel entrances directly from the hospital.
Israel argues that a ceasefire would play into the hands of the terrorists, endanger the lives of hostages and deliver a victory over Hamas. Armed forces have been hunting Hamas for 38 days, since the massacre of 1,200 Israelis on October 7, 2023. The military said 4,300 rocket attacks destroyed hundreds of Hamas positions and killed thousands of fighters as forces took control of northern Gaza. However, the death toll is enormous: more than 11,000 people have died during the war, including 4,000 children, the Palestinian health authority reports.
