Seriously ill baby dies in England – after dispute over life support measures Hundreds of thousands demonstrate in Spain against amnesty for Catalans

After a legal dispute, doctors in England stopped life-prolonging measures for a seriously ill baby against the parents’ wishes. Now the child died on Monday evening, the British news agency PA reported.

The parents said in a statement from the organization Christian Concern that they were angry and heartbroken. The eight-month-old girl, named Indi, had previously been taken to a hospice from hospital in the city of Nottingham.

The girl suffered from a condition called mitochondriopathy, a genetic disease that affects the nervous system and muscles and drains the body of energy. An appeal court in London has rejected the parents’ request to be allowed to take the child home to die.

Treatment pointless and painful

A court had previously ruled that Indi no longer needed life-sustaining measures. According to doctors in Nottingham, the treatment is pointless and painful for the child. A request to transfer the child to Italy for further treatment was also rejected. The parents also failed before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

The case is reminiscent of similar disputes over terminally ill children in Britain. The legal debate surrounding twelve-year-old Archie, who suffered serious brain damage in a domestic accident, caused a particular stir. The boy, who was subsequently brain dead, had his devices turned off in August 2022 after the Supreme Court ruled against the parents’ wishes.
