German opposition leader Friedrich Merz wants to take clear action against xenophobia and anti-Semitism in the country.

German opposition leader Friedrich Merz (68) strikes a clear tone in an inflammatory letter: Against the background of large pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli protests in Germany, Merz calls for clear action against anti-Semitism. Immigrants should, among other things, explicitly recognize Israel’s right to exist. A visit to a concentration camp should also become mandatory.

The chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) told the ‘NZZ’ in October that Germany could no longer accept anti-Semitic refugees: “We have enough anti-Semitic young men in the country.” In the magazine “The European,” Merz now demands: “This activity in Germany must come to an end.” This while Stars of David were once again handed out in Berlin and “pasted on many doors,” according to the politician.

“We will not leave our country to the enemies of democracy,” is the title of the Union leader’s statement. “We have long underestimated the extent of xenophobia and especially anti-Semitism in Germany.” Merz speaks of a “long and difficult path to contain and reduce these hostilities.”

Actions instead of words

“Just talking no longer helps, clear and unequivocal decisions are now needed,” said the federal chairman of the CDU, who as chairman of the CDU/CSU faction is also opposition leader. In October he spoke about a ‘naive asylum system’ in Germany. One measure Merz is now proposing is an obligation to recognize Israel’s sovereignty in order to maintain German citizenship.

“The terror in Israel is also directed against us, it is directed against our freedom and our way of life, it is celebrated on the German streets and with verbal attacks that do not always remain verbal.” Schools, Merz writes, should focus on history and religious education. Every schoolchild must visit a concentration camp museum before graduation. No one should be relieved of such a duty.

“No school should miss visiting a concentration camp before graduating, especially in schools with a large number of students from migrant families. Naturalization in Germany must be combined with a clear commitment to freedom of religion and belief, as well as a commitment to the right to exist of the State of Israel.”
