Clear signals from the leadership of the American Republicans: The party leadership wants to support former president Donald Trump (77) as a presidential candidate for 2024 if he is elected. This, even if Trump is convicted. Ronna McDaniel (50), chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), said this in an interview with CNN. “Whoever the voters choose is the right candidate,” McDaniel said.

Trump leads in polls by a wide margin over all Republican rivals. The fact that there are various legal proceedings against him seems to give Trump’s popularity a boost. When asked by CNN whether Trump would run for office if convicted, party leader McDaniel said Sunday: “As party leader, I will support whoever the voters choose. And yes, if you vote for Donald Trump, she will support him.

A criminal record is not a reason not to vote

When asked by the CNN presenter whether Trump could be the party’s standard-bearer even as a ‘convicted criminal’, the top Republican replied that this circumstance would certainly be ‘newsworthy’. But “yes,” McDaniel said, “I will support Trump as the Republican candidate even if he is convicted.”

Trump leads in polls and swing states

Many Trump supporters believe his numerous legal troubles are politically motivated. This is evident from a study by CBS News and the YouGov polling institute. “The voters believe,” McDaniel explains, “that there is a two-tiered justice system.”

A recent New York Times survey also showed Trump’s dominance not only in the Republican Party, but also in key swing states. Trump is ahead of the sitting American president in five of the six swing states that Joe Biden (80) won in 2020.

McDaniel: ‘People can’t afford food. They can’t afford to fill up their car with gas. They believe this country is on the wrong path. They want our party to fight for them and for us to win in November.”

Trump is reportedly planning major raids, large camps and mass deportations

Meanwhile, Trump is preparing for 2024 without participating in his challengers’ three TV debates so far. On Saturday evening, Trump was celebrated as a spectator at a UFC match in New York, where he enjoyed soaking in the crowd with a serious look.

The same day, the New York Times reported that Trump plans to take drastic action on immigration if re-elected. He is considering far-reaching raids, the construction of huge deportation camps and would “deport millions”.

The Democratic-affiliated newspaper’s report is based on interviews with several Trump advisers. Trump’s plans are described as an “attack on immigration on a scale never seen before in modern American history.” Trump himself has not yet commented on such plans in the election phase.
