Data from that night showed no change in the magma chambers and did not indicate activity approaching the surface. Nevertheless, a volcanic eruption could soon occur in Iceland on the Reykjanes Peninsula southwest of the capital Reykjavik.
After an earthquake swarm lasting several days – a specific form of a series of earthquakes – authorities evacuated the town of Grindavík with around 3,700 inhabitants and also closed the nearby Blue Lagoon, the island’s best-known tourist attraction in the North Atlantic Ocean. Photos from the area show deep cracks in the streets and meters-wide holes in the ground.
Significant damage to homes is expected. The Icelandic government wanted to discuss the situation at lunchtime.

The earthquake swarm started about two and a half weeks ago. There have been thousands of earthquakes since then. Volcanic eruptions had already occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in 2021, 2022 and this summer. Each was heralded by a longer series of earthquakes.
The Icelandic Ministry of Civil Protection is expecting an eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, based on the series of earthquakes mapped below. More than 1,000 earthquakes have been reported in the past 24 hours.
