There are now signs of trench warfare in Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine has now come to a standstill. Since Ukrainian forces retook Kherson in the south of the country last fall, the front line has remained virtually unchanged. The Ukrainian offensive also came to nothing. A bloody trench war ensues.

According to Austrian military historian Markus Reisner, this is not a good development. “The West is not prepared for this,” says the expert in an interview with “Deutsche Welle”. Instead of facing the facts, the West still believes that Ukraine is capable of defeating Russia. The war has been ‘covered up’ for twenty months, says Reisner.

Ukraine must remain in the global spotlight

According to the expert, the West only has two options. One option is to go ‘all in’. “In this case, four to five loaded military trains would have to travel to Ukraine every week.”

The other option is to self-critically admit that it is not possible to win the war. But you have to tell the Ukrainians that. Negotiations may then have to begin, but with the recognition that Ukraine’s state borders cannot be maintained in their current state. The reason: Russia will destroy Ukraine. Reisner: “If Ukraine fails to remain in the spotlight of the world public and make it clear, especially to the European side, that the war for Europe may be decided in Ukraine, then things will be difficult for Ukraine.”

But the situation is not hopeless for Ukraine. “If Ukraine manages to do the opposite, the conflict could develop in this direction.” (dzc)
