The Spanish Socialists: Amnesty Agreement with Separatists

PSOE negotiator Santos Cerdán announced this in Brussels on Thursday. The agreement on amnesty for all “Catalanistas” prosecuted by the judiciary and on other issues was reached on Thursday evening, Spanish media reported.

With the agreement, the Socialists secure the support of junts in the lower house of parliament to re-elect Sánchez for a new four-year term. Last week, the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) agreed to such an agreement.

Now only the Basques are missing

“We are now ready to enter a new historical phase in which a negotiated political solution will be sought based on respect and recognition of the other side,” Cerdán said, referring to the independence movement in Catalonia.

Sánchez now needs the votes of the Basque party PNV, with which negotiations are still ongoing. Unlike before at Junts, an agreement here is considered fairly unproblematic.

The Socialists were under time pressure during the talks: if there was no new government on November 27, the Spaniards would have to vote again on January 14.

The amnesty is intended, among other things, in favor of independence supporters who participated in a failed attempt to secede from the region in northeastern Spain in 2017. This would also apply to Puigdemont, who lives in exile in Belgium.
