Latvia, at the bottom of the EU, offers legal protection to same-sex couples. Spanish politician shot in Madrid

Gay and lesbian couples can officially register their partnership in Latvia from July 2024. The parliament of the Baltic EU country in Riga on Thursday adopted several legal changes that will allow homosexuals to legally protect their relationships.

However, the new regulations do not mean that there is equality with marriage. This was included as a finding in the law at the request of an opposition MP. The Latvian Constitution also explicitly states that marriage is a union between a man and a woman.

After a sometimes heated debate, a narrow majority of the 100 MPs in the Saeima parliament voted in favor of Latvia’s controversial regulations, which aim to provide a minimum of legal and social protection to same-sex couples.

Homosexuality is still often a taboo subject in Latvia and is met with reservations. In this year’s Rainbow Europe rankings from the organization ILGA Europe, the Baltic state in Northeastern Europe ranks 37. The legal situation for LGBTQ people within the EU was only worse in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.
