The OAS calls on Nicaragua to respect human rights

The Organization of American States (OAS) This Wednesday he reminded the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortegawhich will continue to be obliged to respect human rights after that Central American country has finished leaving the organization.

The government of Nicaragua condemned November 19, 2021 OAS Charter and announced his departure from the Pan American Organization, a two-year process that ends next week.

The Permanent Council of the OAS acknowledged this Wednesday that Nicaragua will cease to be part of the organization on November 19, but “stressed” that this “does not nullify the country’s other legal obligations” regarding human rights.

“Nicaragua remains obliged to respect all human rights contained in customary norms; all human rights contained in multilateral conventions on human rights of which Nicaragua is a part,” the OAS pointed out.

Likewise, the permanent council announced that it “will continue to pay special attention to the situation in Nicaragua, making every effort to promote and encourage full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens of the country in Nicaragua.”

Nicaragua has been going through a political and social crisis since the 2018 protests, accentuated since President Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, were re-elected in 2021 elections and much of the opposition has been jailed.

Ortega’s government announced in November 2021 its departure from the OAS after 51 General Assembly organization to approve a resolution in which it is considered that the elections “were not free or fair.

In March 2022, the then ambassador of Nicaragua to the OAS, Arthur McFieldshe rebelled against his own government and denounced Ortega’s “dictatorship” before the permanent council of the organization.
