A dinner this summer turned out very differently than expected for Becky Prout and her partner Chad: the 31-year-old English woman suddenly spoke with an American accent. What initially sounded strange turned out to be a life-threatening situation. Doctors diagnosed the woman with the autoimmune disease anti-NMDAR encephalitis, also known as ‘fire in the head’. This was reported by the British daily Wales Online, among others.
After the speech interruptions, Prout suffered several serious seizures and was hospitalized. But that’s not all: the 31-year-old was pregnant at the time. Nevertheless, the doctors put her in an induced coma. According to the report, three weeks later there were complications with the pregnancy and the baby had to be removed. Prout didn’t notice anything. She missed the first month of the newborn child’s life.
The autoimmune disease anti-NMDAR encephalitis is a life-threatening inflammation of the central nervous system. The body produces antibodies against a protein that plays an important role in signal transmission in the brain, the so-called NMDA receptor. Encephalitis can cause severe psychiatric and neurological symptoms. Initially, these include delusions, hallucinations, behavioral problems, confusion and anxiety.
As the disease progresses, epileptic seizures, speech and movement disorders and disturbances of the autonomic nervous system, such as cardiac arrhythmias and dysregulation of blood pressure and body temperature, may occur.
Young women in particular, but also men and children, can be affected. There is not always a reason for the autoimmune reaction. However, it can arise as a result of a tumor disease. In Prout’s case, doctors suspect that the inflammation was caused by a cyst on her ovary during her pregnancy. According to a study published by the American Academy of Neurology, the disease is extremely rare in pregnant women, wrote “Wales Online”.
The fact that the young woman initially spoke with an American accent and days later suffered several seizures fits the symptoms. “I think she definitely picked up the American accent from TikTok because she was on it all the time a few weeks ago,” her partner said. “Wales Online” about his partner. “All of a sudden, when she finished eating, boom, she turned into an American person.” He emphasized that his wife was from Doncaster, England, where the incident occurred, and had never been to the United States.
A month after the baby was born, the 31-year-old’s condition improved so that she could be woken up. November 3 was “probably the first day in a long time” that Chad had a conversation with Becky, he told Wales Online. “She is still very, very confused. One moment she’s snuggled up against the baby and I say, ‘Look at you, you’re the best mother in the world.’ And three or four minutes later she says, ‘That’s not my baby’.”
The new father said recovery could take up to five years. “And now there’s the worry about who Becky will be when she gets better.”
