Matan Yaffe is angry.

The Israeli army has been fighting the Hamas militia on a large scale for a month. After the radical group’s attack on Israel on October 7, the Israeli army is now advancing further into the Gaza Strip. The goal: the elimination of the militia.

But now there are the first voices of Israeli soldiers questioning the meaning of this advance. Matan Yaffe, a volunteer who signed up for military service after the Hamas attack, posted his thoughts on the social media platform X on Sunday.

He is a “proud Israeli patriot,” Yaffe said. But his motivation diminishes every day. “Unfortunately, the madness of the Israeli government does not stop,” said the soldier on X. One failure follows another, many of which are caused by the government. “The combination of all this simply destroys motivation.”

Netanyahu mentioned by name

Many soldiers would question the significance of the entire operation. Self-confidence is low. “And I can say with certainty: this has nothing to do with the enemy – it is up to us or our leadership,” the thread continues.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (74) is also mentioned by name in the messages. The Israeli Prime Minister is primarily responsible for the situation. “I see zero leadership, zero responsibility, zero professionalism, zero honesty, zero morality, zero wisdom and zero courage. Zero zero zero,” the soldier said.

Ultimately, it is clear: if the Israeli army can defeat Hamas, “and I’m not sure we will be able to do that at all,” it will not be due to its leadership. “Instead, my thanks go to every soldier who fought and sacrificed their lives on the ground. Because from above comes: nothing.”

Consequences unclear

The thread sparked a heated debate about In fact, the Netanyahu government has been repeatedly criticized in recent weeks for its lack of warnings of a possible Hamas attack and its intelligence failures.

The Israeli military told the Newsweek platform that the wire “contradicts the expectations and guidelines of the IDF.” All soldiers, regardless of rank, are expected to “act in accordance with the values and guidelines of the IDF, both in routine operations and in times of war.”

It is unclear whether Matan Yaffe’s comments will have any consequences for the soldier. For the fighter it is clear: things cannot continue as before and: Netanyahu must go. “We need new leadership.”
