“One in six couples in Germany suffer from involuntary childlessness – and the trend is increasing – and need help,” said Matthias Wernicke, head of Merck’s German pharmaceutical division. The company is actively combating this: with 13,000 employees in Germany, the DAX group is the world market leader in the field of fertility treatments. This was reported by the Bild newspaper.
But the pharmaceutical giant not only wants to help its customers with their desire to have children, but also its employees. “We understand the enormous emotional and financial burden that infertility can place on the people and families affected. This is just one example of how Merck puts its people first,” Belén Garijo, CEO of Merck, explained to the newspaper.
So it is not just a marketing strategy, but an advantage in the battle for skilled labor. The company wants to attract new employees by supporting employees in fulfilling their desire to have children.
But how does it all work? Without having to speak to a manager, employees can contact the human resources department – confidentially. During the treatment you can submit the invoices to the responsible authority.
The project started in early October. The offer is aimed at all employees: single, married or not. In addition, the partners of Merck employees can also benefit from the offer. For data protection reasons, there are currently no current figures available on whether and how often employees have already used the offer.
Another country shows that the project can be successful: “In the US, where the program has been running since 2010, about one in a hundred employees has benefited from it,” a company spokesperson emphasized to the “Bild” newspaper.
According to Merk, more than five million children have already been born with the help of its products. The company hopes some Hessian babies will join them. (gs)
