Extreme snowstorms have caused chaos in northern China. There were even deaths in Mongolia, authorities said.
Accordingly, six women, a man and a boy (†12), died in Mongolia when they went out to look for their herds of animals during a snowstorm. Search parties found the bodies hours later.
Residents in northern China were also overwhelmed by a snowstorm. China’s Meteorological Agency issued the highest warning level for the north, saying residents should stay in their homes and avoid going out where possible. “Historical records would probably be broken.”
In Harbin, the capital of the northern province of Heilongjiang, schoolchildren had to stay at home. Schools and kindergartens remained closed and the airport was also closed. In addition, many highways were closed. Several thousand workers were clearing snow.
As “ABC News” reports, a building housing a gym collapsed under the mass of snow. Several people were injured, some seriously, and some were reported dead. Chinese authorities initially did not confirm these reports.
In addition, the heating in the capital Beijing was turned on earlier than planned. Authorities usually set a start date for residents to turn on the heating in their homes. This has now been moved forward a week at short notice. (zis)
