There has been no major progress in the Ukrainian counter-offensive recently. Neither Russia nor Ukraine seem capable of achieving decisive success at the moment. Instead, attempts are made again and again to create pinpricks with targeted attacks on key infrastructure.

Ukrainian missiles hit shipyards in the city of Kerch in eastern Crimea this weekend, according to Air Force Chief Mykola Oleshchuk. A state-of-the-art Russian warship was destroyed. Images shared by Ukraine’s Office of Strategic Communications and Information Security document the serious damage. The Ukrainian military announces: The rocket ship was so badly damaged by the explosion that it will probably never leave a port again.

Congratulations from Zelensky

The Russian navy had been “scalped,” Oleshchuk said after the attack. He was referring to the use of the ‘Scalp’ cruise missiles supplied from France, which were used. President Volodymyr Zelensky (46) congratulated his air force on the coup in his evening speech on television on Monday. “I thank everyone who ensured the successful destruction of the Russian ship at the Kerch shipyard,” Zelensky said.

The Russian Ministry of Defense only confirmed that one ship had been destroyed. The name of the ship was not disclosed. No further details were provided.

Port infrastructure is always a goal

Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, based in Crimea, has suffered several setbacks recently. In early August, Ukraine reported that the landing ship Olenegorski Gornjak was attacked by a maritime drone. The submarine Rostov-on-Don and the landing ship Minsk were destroyed in an attack on the port of Sevastopol in mid-September. A few days later, rockets hit the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet.

The Askold is considered one of the most advanced warships in the Russian Navy. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the 67-meter missile carrier was launched in December 2018 and is equipped with cruise missiles that can be launched from eight ramps.
