Popular ocean cleanup technologies are providing new solutions to the plastic problem, according to environmental groups. In a new report, environmental organizations Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and Ocean Care call for action at the source of the problem.
Technologies for cleaning the seas using drones, robots, surface vacuum cleaners or sand filters are harmful to certain species and ecosystems, a statement from Zurich-based marine conservation organization Ocean Care said on Monday.
Because plastic waste and marine life often accumulate in the same areas due to currents, cleanup operations could capture significant amounts of marine life in addition to the plastic, the report said. In some cases, endangered species such as sea turtles or sharks were also reported as bycatch. In addition, certain waste collection techniques are climate-intensive because they rely on fossil fuels.
The report was written by environmental organizations ahead of the UN’s third round of negotiations on a global plastics agreement that begin in Nairobi on November 13. They call on governments to focus this agreement on reducing plastic production rather than on cleaning technologies. (SDA)
