Israel is waging war against the terrorist group Hamas. But it is not just the Gaza Strip that is being fought over. Fighting is also taking place on the Lebanese-Israeli border.

Only on Thursday did the Israeli army and the Lebanese Hezbollah fight fiercely. Israel reported a “broad attack” on Shiite militia positions in the neighboring country, while Hezbollah said it attacked “19 Israeli positions simultaneously.”

Experts fear that Hezbollah could open a new front to support Hamas and that the war could spread to other countries in the region. An indication of this: a special forces unit backed by Iran is apparently currently in Lebanon.

It is considered “Hezbollah 2.0”

According to Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee, this would be the Imam Hussein division. “After a series of failures suffered by Hezbollah against Israel in recent weeks, Iran’s Imam Hussein Brigade, led by a commander named Zulfiqar, has arrived in southern Lebanon,” Adraee wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Intelligence information suggests that the Imam Hussein Division is behind several rocket attacks on Israel, Newsweek reports. Not much is known about this special unit. It is considered “Hezbollah 2.0” and is well equipped. Their arsenal would include missiles, precision-guided munitions and drones. It consists of highly trained fighters from various countries, including Lebanon, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan.

Were used in Syria

The Imam Hussein Division is a division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Guard is part of the country’s armed forces, alongside Iran’s official military. The Imam Hussein Division was formed during the first Gulf War (1980-1988), which took place between Iran and Iraq.

Since then, the special unit has been deployed in various areas abroad. For example, they were allegedly sent to Syria to help President Bashar Al-Assad (58) and to fight against the terrorist group Islamic State (IS).

Another front was feared

Now the special unit could be deployed again. This time against Israel. They could have been positioned for that. Whether there will actually be a new front for Israel could be decided as early as Friday.

An important speech is expected from Hezbollah boss Hassan Nasrallah (63). There are fears that Hezbollah could open a new front in support of Hamas and that the war could spread to other countries in the region.
