Strange scene at the ministerial meeting on Thursday in Berlin: Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlic Radman (65) comes a little close to his German colleague Annalena Baerbock (42).
A video fragment gives the impression that the Croat wanted to kiss the Green politician on the lips. The photo was taken during a group photo on the sidelines of a meeting of the European Ministers of the Interior and Foreign Affairs. The ministerial meeting was about the preconditions for the future enlargement of the EU.
When Grlic Radman approaches the German Foreign Minister, she turns away. It seems like she is not comfortable with the situation.
The video is causing a stir: voices from the Croatian media and politicians are calling it a “completely inappropriate gesture” and a “fiasco”. Left-wing MP Ivana Kekin (39) sharply criticized civilian minister Grlic Radman: he had shamed all Croats.
Meanwhile, Grlic Radman denies the accusations. At a media conference, he explained that he wanted to greet his colleague in a “humane way.” Ministers always greet each other warmly. But he apologizes if anyone takes offense to his gesture. Baerbock has not yet commented on the incident. (bab)
