Botox in food?: Italian woman eats pizza – three days later she is dead

Eating out in a pizzeria: what sounds like a pleasant Saturday evening turned into a nightmare for Gerardina C.* (46) and her husband Angelo M.* (52).

The couple wanted to start their day off last weekend with a delicious pizza. But just a few hours after visiting a restaurant in the small Italian community of Ariano Irpino, Gerardina C. began experiencing stomach pains, as the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera” reports.

Rejected despite pain

The woman is getting worse and worse. Ultimately, the couple goes to the emergency room – and is turned away. When the woman asks for help for the second time, the doctor sends her home in pain.

Only when they are both taken to the emergency room with severe stomach cramps are they taken seriously. However, all help comes too late for Gerardina C.. The woman dies in hospital. Her husband can be saved by the doctors.

The Public Prosecution Service is investigating

Food poisoning is now suspected. What is technically known as botulinum toxin is known to many as Botox. It is the strongest, most natural poison in the world. It mainly occurs in spoiled meat or sausage products, but also in unclean filled canned goods. The poison is also used in cosmetics and medicines. Whether it’s squinting eyes or reduced wrinkles, Botox has been an integral part of the beauty industry for 20 years.

However, for Gerardina C. and her husband, botulinum toxin is just that: a poison. The Public Prosecution Service has started proceedings against the two owners of the pizzeria and against the doctor who sent the couple away. An autopsy next weekend should also show whether Gerardina C. really died of food poisoning. According to the pizzeria, no other guests felt bad that Saturday evening. (mgf)
