“The mission was to kill. We should not kidnap, we should just kill,” said Omar Sami Marzuk Abu Rusha. He is a member of Hamas and was involved in the October 7 massacre. He is currently in Israeli custody, where he was interviewed by an interrogator. Israel’s domestic secret service Shin Bet released a video of the conversation on Wednesday.
In the video, which lasts about six minutes, Abu Rusha talks about horrific acts. At the beginning he explains that he has been a member of Hamas for eight to twelve months. Until his arrest, he worked as a soldier in the Nukhba unit. He lived in the A-Tafakh region of the Gaza Strip.
The interviewer asks him what exactly his orders were on October 7. The answer: “To kill everyone we see and come back.” When asked whether the order also applied to women and children, Abu Rusha said: “Yes. They told us that all the settlers were soldiers. Kill everyone you see.”
The Hamas soldier was sent to Kibbutz Kfar Azza. He drove to the border in a jeep with other Hamas fighters. There was also a “signpost” who was not part of the team. “He opened the border gate with an explosive device,” Abu Rusha recalled. From there we continued to the kibbutz.
In the first house they initially did not meet people. Yet Hamas member Hamzeh A-Zarad burned down the outdoor area, after which a man with a hose came running out of the garden. “Abu Ahmad and Hamzeh saw him, shot him and killed him.”
The fighters then moved to a second home. There were no people there. “I set fire to the bedroom,” said Abu Rusha. On the way to the third house, the party finally saw a woman standing behind a window. One of the terrorists shot in their direction. “She fell.”
Eventually the men moved to three more abandoned houses. They spent about an hour and a half in one. “We grabbed a laptop and turned on the news.” They were interrupted by three ‘settlers’.
There was a shooting. “Everyone shot in the direction of the other,” says the Hamas fighter. Abu Rusha fatally shot one of the men. His fellow fighters threw hand grenades at the other two Israelis. “Then we ran away.”
The hunters hid under trees for about two hours before leaving again. They broke into another house through a window. At first they thought they were alone. “We ate dates and drank water,” says Abu Rushas. And then cruel acts followed.
The warriors heard noises from the security room. When the interviewer asks Abu Rusha what sounds there are, he answers, “The crying of little children.” Without blinking, the terrorists opened fire. “We shot at the door until we heard no more noise.” When the interviewer asks what that means, Abu Rusha replies, “That they have died.”
Israeli soldiers arrived shortly afterwards. After a ten-minute battle, the Hamas fighters surrendered. The interrogator asks if it makes sense in Islam to kill children. Abu Rushas says: «No. Children are not involved.” When asked if his parents were proud of him, he replied: “They don’t know that I am part of Hamas. If my father sees me, he will shoot me for these actions.” (Ms.)
